Remix Revival

Sep. 18th, 2017 05:30 pm

[personal profile] lost_spook
[community profile] remixrevival went live yesterday, and Remix Madness today and I had a remixed fic in each! (I didn't until late yesterday, though; only my regular Remix and then I poked at Madness and was startled to see that it had a Chalet School/DW crossover involving Miss Annersley and Seven, because it seemed extremely unlikely that someone else as well as me had done that, and they hadn't. It had just been slipped in while I wasn't looking!)

Anyway, in unexpected Remixes, my official Remix fic is a reworking of my old NYR 2009 Dungeons & Dragons fic, via a clever device:

Among the Shattered Tales (The girl once helped remix) (1235 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dungeons and Dragons (Cartoon)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sheila "the Thief", Hank "the Ranger", Original Female Character(s)
Additional Tags: Implied Sheila/Hank
Summary: She has many stories, but for some reason a lot of people like this one.

And in my even more unexpected Remix from Madness, I have this really lovely little reversed-POV version of Each A Glimpse and Gone Forever in which Seven turns up on a train in time to help out a young and grieving not-yet-Miss Annersley; all the more pleasing because the original is an odd little piece I have a lot of fondness for:

In The Wink Of An Eye (Each A Glimpse, And Gone Forever Remix) (819 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Chalet School - Elinor M. Brent-Dyer, Doctor Who
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Hilda Annersley, Seventh Doctor
Additional Tags: Remix
Summary: On the worst train journey of her young life, Hilda Annersley meets a kind - if unusual - stranger.

I see Madness doesn't actually close till the 25th, so maybe I should have another go, but for that I might need brain and mine got used up today dealing with insurance renewal, blah blah blah. (In the usual nature of these things, the simple thing is complicated by technology being disobliging because OF COURSE and is still only part done. Probably.)

Still, I am rewatching The Shadow of the Tower, so that keeps me reasonably happy. (I even dreamt the other night that James Maxwell held my hand for a moment. He was a fleeting sort of time ghost, part of a performance that had slipped through time to where I was lying, which apparently kept my pesky inner dream monitor from spoiling things with the usual "well, that isn't v realistic, we can't have this, and WHY ARE THERE BEES/isn't he dead etc. etc." Bees = totally implausible. Timeslip ghosts = perfectly natural and believable.)

Hard times, but also optimism

I am not happy with my response time these days. I read people's new entries almost every day, but if I'm on the tablet, I only read. For typing, I need the laptop, which I only turn that on 2-3 times a week now, so I often fall behind with posting and replying. When I'm feeling better, I do turn on the laptop almost every day, but right now... I've been feeling exhausted and have been having trouble focusing. Earlier, I took some ingredients out of the fridge, and then just stood there staring at it for a few minutes; the gears in my head aren't turning as they should.

Also, on Friday I was agitated because I really needed touch, and then on both Saturday and Sunday I was nearly going crazy with the need, actually cried several times in frustration. I desperately wanted to talk to T, but I am making myself wait until Monday (she works weekends). I expect that talking to her will help at least a little, but I wish so much that I could see her in person. Gods, this weekend was so unbearable, if I had a ton of money I would have bought a plane ticket on the spot.

I feel a bit better now (Sunday evening), though. I had to force myself to go out today, because I wanted to just stay in bed. I did it reluctantly, but I did do my arm exercises and the 5-mile walk with Wyn, and I think it helped, because I felt noticeably better afterwards. I wouldn't have had the motivation to do it for myself, but I was thinking of Cor; I want to help, and to do that I first need to be functional, so for his sake I will do what I need to do.

Oh, some good news: Firefly gave me some potatoes, and after I had my dinner there was still some left over, and I thought "do I want more?" and the answer was no, I'm pleasantly full. Which makes today the first time in months that my hunger has been satisfied. It feels soooo good to not be hungry. I'm still rationing, and still no sign of a job on the horizon, but today has been...comfortable (at least food-wise), which I really really appreciate, after having lived with the discomfort of constant hunger for such a long time.

I hope this entry doesn't sound too negative. The exercise and food has helped immensely, and those positives are my focus, but I don't know if it comes across that way. Hopefully tomorrow will be similarly good with food and exercise, and if I can talk to T, that would make it and even better day, so I'm feeling optimistic.

The Oldest Living Bachelor in Oakdale (3130 words) by misslucyjane

Summary:

Sweet, shy Steve Rogers had had it! He now held the dubious title of oldest unmarried man in Oakdale — and a virgin, to boot. It was high time he shed his scholarly shell and unleashed the temptor within. Problem was, he didn't know the first thing about men, let alone seducing one….

Heartbreaker Bucky Barnes had been away for twelve years, and boy, had things changed! The innocent boy who once had tutored him in math now was a man in need of his help… to snare a man! He'd always admired Steve, but his stunning transformation was too much for any man to resist — even a sworn bachelor like him...

The Knuckleduster Cowtown Creator by Forrest Harris (1999)

I'll give you three guesses which fandom I had started dabbling in when I saw this in a post by an online acquaintance and had to track down (luckily second-hand) for myself :)

Obviously, it was written for RPG enthusiasts to help them create their Old West towns: less for reading, more for reference. All manner of good stuff like the typical businesses in town, floor plans for buildings, goods available in all kinds of stores and suggested prices, typical character types and the jobs they might do, medical skills (and what doctors couldn't do), livery prices, stagecoaches and robberies, morse code and restaurant meals, fancy house euphemisms and gambling games, and of course lists of names (people, horse, stores, towns and so on)... not what an expert on the period might want but for someone who wanted to get their game right, it's wonderful.

And for a humble little fanfic writer who has a complete fascination for domestic detail and wants to get her stories to at least sound right... it's been a treasure :) to the point where I scanned what I found the most valuable bits of the town/character stuff and keep the scans on my hard drive so I can take the information with me wherever I might be scribbling...

Friday Five: a one to five mixed bag

Is it Friday again, already? Time just keeps rushing by...

This week's questions can be found here:
https://thefridayfive.dreamwidth.org/72103.html

1. If you had a year off (with pay, to make it interesting), what would you do with it?
2. What are two things you would do to improve the country if you were in complete charge?
3. What three TV shows do you like watching?
4. What are your four favorite ethnic dishes?
5. What are five words you love to use?

1. I would want to spend it all with T. Probably at another time I could have come up with a more interesting answer, but right now all I want is to be with my love. Since the question only states that I'd have time off, I guess she'd still be working, in which case I'd take over most of the household chores, partly to make life easier for her, and partly because I get very restless unless I have *some* sort of work, and hobbies aren't enough for me. Although, if I had money for craft supplies, then I would also spend more time making things.

2. One, abolish daylight savings time; it's nothing but a headache. And two, require drivers to re-take and pass a driving test every time they renew their license. Because people apparently forget how to drive.

I know there are bigger problems than this, but I am a practical person; the first thing I always focus on is, what will have an immediate positive impact on people's day to day lives. I think it's best to start there, and then work outwards from there.

3. Star Trek (any), Zorro, M*A*S*H.

4. I wish some of these questions were in a different order. I could come up with four TV shows, but not four ethnic dishes. I like spaghetti, if that counts as ethnic. I like paprikash. Oh, and there's a thing called burek? Had to look it up: Börek is a family of baked filled pastries made of a thin flaky dough known as phyllo, of Anatolian origins and also found in the cuisines of the Balkans, Levant, Mediterranean, and other countries in Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Wikipedia

Can't think of a fourth. See, I never eat out, so I only eat what I can cook myself. (The burek came from a European bakery, long ago and far away, but it was so good that I still remember it.)

5. Let me see... delicious, tenuous, lovely, somewhat, greatly. At first I started writing words that I love, but the question asks for words you love to use, which is somewhat different. :)

15 Characters Meme

I haven't forgotten the other meme, but you know what I haven't done for a year? Yes, that's right! The 15 characters meme. Well, that will never do...

1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"

3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

Courtesy of a friend who couldn't use the tickets, I went to the Nationals baseball game last night with [personal profile] sara_merry99 and her husband Patrick. It was great fun to see them again. The weather was perfect. Just as the game started, some vintage planes flew overhead on their way to Andrews AFB to a weekend air show. That was pretty special. The Nationals lost but it was a great evening.

Just a couple of photos with the view from our seats.
