It's roasting hot here in DC. We've had so many days where the temperature was over 90 F.

Last weekend, I volunteered at a three-day conference for WordPress, an interesting blogging platform. I worked registration, which was a great way to meet new people while still in my comfort zone. The I got to go to sessions for free. I learned a lot.

Yesterday I used up a couple of gift cards at the bookstore. There's nothing like browsing actual books. I'm currently reading All the President's Menus by Julie Hyzy. The main character is a chef at the White House. It's light, fun fare.

Work has been really busy. We started 43 new people on 2 projects on Thursday. Tomorrow, we are adding 40 people in the morning and 20 in the afternoon. Good times.

I still take photos, but I haven't figured out a good hosting solution. Anybody happy with what they've worked out?

Some more sad news for Doctor Who fans (well, of the Classic variety at least): Deborah Watling has died, aka companion Victoria Waterfield. A lot of people have linked to the clip from Tomb, but it is such a beautiful scene, so I'm going to do it as well:

(Forgive the embed outside the cut this once.)

Victoria was a companion that I always liked the idea of more than what they actually did with her most of the time, but Debbie Watling always seemed pretty lovely, and she had a very good relationship and rapport with both Patrick and Frazer. My old telly adventures have also led to me watching her (at least briefly) appear in The Power Game, along with her father, Jack, who was a regular (a favour which she returned in DW, getting him cast as Professor Travers in two of the Yeti stories).

I haven't posted in what feels like a lifetime because the muse hasn't been around much, but she made an appearance today so I made some artwork for the SGA episode Suspicion. The bigger version looks better than the squinty one. :D

Title: I Dreamt That I Grew Wings
Pairings: Martin Crieff & Douglas Richardson & Arthur Shappey, Martin Crieff/Douglas Richardson/Arthur Shappey, Martin Crieff /Arthur Shappey, Martin Crieff/Douglas Richardson, Douglas Richardson/Arthur Shappey

Summary: Arthur accidentally killed a man, Douglas did a spot of smuggling, and Martin only ever wanted to fly. Of course, sharing a prison cell is not all that different from being stuck on an aeroplane together... except that it kind of is.
Notes: WARNINGS: A scene involving off-screen non-con. Setting-related verbal/physical/sexual harassment and background violence throughout.
Disclaimer: I know very little about the UK penitentiary system or prisons in general, so Iā€™m sure that the details of prison life in this story will be highly inaccurate.

1. Have you come to the conclusion that your parents music (music popular in their time) isn't so bad?

2. Is there a song/group/singer you once adored, but don't now?

3. Is there a song/group/singer you once despised, but is okay now?

4. Have you ever heard a favorite song and suddenly had a reinterpretation its meaning?

5. What song would you just as soon never hear again?

To start at the end, as it were, before I forget everything. The theme for this week in my old telly adventures seems to have mainly been Bad Stuff Happening to Planes.*

Clocks ticked. So many clocks, lining the walls, ticking and tocking away the seconds of inexorable time. Inexorable, that is, for some. Crawling through the shadows, sonic screwdriver in one hand, a hotch-potch of home-made mischief in the other, came the Doctor. The Clockmaker sought to manipulate time; to twist it to his own evil ends; and the Doctor was the universe's best line of defence. One meddlesome Time Lord, and a great deal of improvising.

Clocks ticked. Time ā€“ and so much else ā€“ moved on. And yet, mused the Doctor, as she ducked a laser beam, some things never change.

Remix!

If there's one thing I'll risk signing up for, even in summer, and even verging on Yuletide, it's Remix! And someone has set up a replacement for the much-lamented RemixRedux at [community profile] remixrevival and sign ups are open at AO3 from now until the 30th. If you're also into remixing, or want to be, head over there now!

This version also allows art/art remixes (and art/fic, fic/art remixes) if that would interest you more than writing. (I went for fic/fic; I love the whole thing of writing remixes and being remixed in writing.) It seems to allow origfic as well, and there will still be a Remix Madness collection, when anyone can throw their works into the ring without signing up, which is about as low pressure you can get in a writing exchange. :-)

Happy Bastille Day! I am reminded of a fanfic where Ronon casually observed that the first two weeks of July are a party of nations.

I am attending a conference where I hope to expand my skill set. I'm volunteering for several shifts instead of paying for it which is very nice. So far I have learned new things and eaten a very nice banh mi.

It is roasting hot and very humid in DC (our typical July weather). I hope everyone has a nice weekend!
